Hand Held Vane Tester 0 to 200kPa - S182

The field vane shear test (FVST) is the most widely used method for measuring the undrained shear strength of soft to stiff clays. For this reason, a preliminary investigation of soft clays with a hand-held vane tester is both economical and useful. The S182 Hand Held Vane Tester has good repeatability and is quick in providing valuable information for planning and more detailed surveys.

The Vane Tester consists of three exchangeable vanes, extended by 150mm Extension Rod. It covers three ranges of measurement, 0-50kPa, 0-160kPa, 0-260kPa, depending on the size of the vane used: 16 x 32mm, 20 x 40mm or 25.4 x 50.8mm.

500mm and 1m Extension Rods can be purchased as an optional extra.

The peak value is determined by means of the scale-ring, which has to be turned back to the zero position before each measurement. The measuring head is sufficiently rugged to be used as a handle during penetration and retraction of the vane. To correct for the skin friction of the extension rod, dummy tests are performed with the rods and the dummy tip only.

Hand Vane Tester - SL810

Handheld, portable and easily used piece of field equipment to enable geotechnical engineers and technicians to provide accurate and meaningful results of shear strength in kilopascals (kPa).

If used correctly it will also measure residual shear strength of cohesive soils (ie clays and silts).

The 19mm vane blade range is approximately 180kPa. Dependant on the internal spring, full range can be between 170-200 kpa. The 33mm vane blade range is approximately 40kPa.
Operation

A 19mm vane blade is screwed in to the base of the Hand Vane Tester and the vane is pushed into the soil. Simply rotate the torque head at a rate of 1 revolution per minute and take a reading off the face when the soil fails. A pointer stays in place when failure occurs so all you have to do is look up the reading from the face on the supplied calibration chart to get your reading in kPa.

The Hand Vane Tester is supplied as a complete kit with torque head, 19mm vane blade, 33mm vane blade, 2 spanners and an aluminium carry case.

The H-70 was originally developed for the special task of preliminary investigations in soft clays without pre-boring. It allows for safe boring down to 10 metres by simple hammering, drilling or pressing. It is a lightweight instrument that can be carried by a single person. Its unique 180 degrees 'anti-friction' slip-coupling system always ascertains the real friction between rods and soil.
